Speak a draft, then check the text
You will distinguish dictation from two-way voice, check a transcript and continue in text. Example responses are illustrations, not an audio recording.
Documentation checked September 30, 2026 describes voice in beta on Web, Desktop and Mobile across plans, with additional languages in beta. Voice mode is for Chat, not Cowork or Code. Dictation can still enter text in those other workflows.
Check microphone and conversation
Use a quiet place and fictional data. Open the intended account and a new conversation. Dictation converts speech to written input. Voice mode uses the sound-wave control for a conversation in which Claude speaks back. Read browser microphone permissions and allow only the site you intend.
Set voice language in Settings > General > Voice > Language if offered. Display language and spoken language are different settings. Inspect actual controls rather than relying on old icon placement.
Rehearse a bounded update
Speak or dictate:
Help me rehearse a 30-second course update.
Facts: two units are ready; Unit 3 is being edited; no completion date was set.
Ask one clarification question at a time. Do not invent a date or send anything.
Read the recognized text before relying on it. Numbers, names and negatives can be misheard. If “no date” becomes a date, correct immediately.

We need to decide the completion date before announcing a launch.
Compare facts with your source. A fluent spoken answer can still be wrong.
Choose listening behavior and correct it
Hands-free listens for natural pauses. Push-to-talk gives more control in noise. If interrupted or misunderstood, use push-to-talk or move somewhere quieter rather than speaking private details louder.
The transcript misheard the status. Unit 3 is being edited, not ready.
Correct only that status and keep the date unset.
Confirm the correction in text. The documentation says voice transcripts are saved in chat history like text conversations. Voice is not automatically temporary or private from retention.
Continue in text and across devices
Switch the same conversation to text and ask:
Give me the final update in two sentences for my review.
Keep only the confirmed facts. Do not send it.
Open the same account on mobile and locate the conversation if synchronization is available. Verify its title and last correction. Do not assume a different account contains the same history.
Voice can use connected tools under their existing permissions. This exercise needs none. Speech is not approval for unrelated mail, calendar access or sending.
Graded practice
Easy: distinguish modes
Try dictation and voice. Success: explain text input versus two-way speech.
Intermediate: correct a transcript
Correct one misheard fictional status. Success: final text preserves the negative and missing date.
Challenging: continue without losing facts
Move from voice to text, then reopen on the same account. Success: the corrected source facts remain intact.
Troubleshooting
No audio: inspect site microphone permissions, input device and account availability.
Interruptions: quieter environment or push-to-talk.
Choppy output: check network and resource use before retrying.
Stopped response: inspect usage limits and connection; do not enable paid usage by default.
Unexpected tool request: stop and check purpose and permission. Voice does not widen scope.
Finish by stopping voice mode and checking the final transcript before reuse.
